A former United States Men's National Team star has blasted Lionel Messi's decision not to attend a ceremony with President Joe Biden at the White House.
Back in the summer of 2023, Messi decided to ditch European football after leaving French giants Paris Saint Germain for Major League Soccer outfit Inter Miami.
Since then, the popularity of football in the United States has grown massively and Messi has since been joined by former teammates Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami.
Last week, it was reported that Messi was set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the highest honour a civilian can receive in the United States.

The medal is given to "individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors".
However, Messi failed to attend the ceremony at the White House due to scheduling conflicts.
In a statement, Messi said: "It’s a great honor to receive this recognition. I’m truly grateful for it. Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment and won’t be able to attend the ceremony at the White House on January 4. But I deeply appreciate this gesture."
Lionel Messi criticised by former USMNT star for snubbing President Joe Biden ceremony
Messi has now been slammed by former USMNT star Alexi Lalas, who wrote on social media: "It was ridiculous and strange to award it to Messi. But if you're going to accept the honor, then find a way to be in DC."

As reported by talkSPORT, the White House said of the decision to hand Messi the Presidential Medal of Freedom: "Messi is the most decorated player in the history of professional soccer.
"He supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador."
Last season, Messi was left disappointed after Inter Miami suffered a shock exit in the MLS playoffs when they were beaten by Atlanta United.
Since then, manager Gerardo Martino resigned as manager and was replaced by Messi's former teammate Javier Mascherano.
