Harry Maguire leads tributes to George Baldock as ex-Premier League star 'found dead in swimming pool' at 31

Baldock was found dead in a swimming pool at his home in Greece.

Tributes have poured in for George Baldock after the former Premier League star was found dead at his home in Greece at the age of 31.

Former Sheffield United star Baldock, who joined Greek club Panathinaikos in the summer, was found dead in his swimming pool at his home on Wednesday.

Concerns were raised when Baldock's wife was unable to contact him after several hours without a response. He was later found in his swimming pool and pronounced dead by a doctor after emergency services were called to the scene.

His exact cause of death will be determined by a post-mortem examination.

Panathinaikos blacked out their profile picture on X and Instagram in the wake of the tragic news, while his former club Sheffield United - where he spent seven years prior to his move to Greece - issued a statement expressing condolences to his family and friends.

"Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock," read a club statement.

"The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends."

Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire, who himself previously played for Sheffield United, also paid tribute to Baldock.

He posted a picture of the Greek defender on social media while also writing 'RIP' with a broken heart icon.

The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) added: "Everyone at the PFA is deeply saddened by the passing of George Baldock.

"The immediate reactions to George’s death, at such a tragically young age, reflect how loved and respected he was by teammates, fans and so many across the game. Our thoughts are with George's family and his many friends, within football and beyond."

The FA also posted a statement through the official England account on X expressing sadness at Baldock's death, which has occurred on the eve of the Three Lions' Nations League clash with Greece.

"We're extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock," read the statement.

"George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece – our opponents on Thursday night.

"We're thinking of George's family, friends and team-mates at club and country at this difficult time."

It is likely further tributes will be made to Baldock at Wembley before Thursday's match between England and Greece.
