Gary Neville demands major rule change for international tournaments after Euro 2024 as he says 'get rid of it'

Gary Neville's proposed rule change was in place at this summer's Copa America.

Gary Neville has called for a major rule change at international tournaments following Euro 2024.

Neville was part of ITV's broadcast for its coverage of the Euros this summer.

Upon returning home from Germany, he made a worrying claim about Harry Kane following his campaign.

And on the latest episode of The Overlap - brought to you by SkyBet, Neville was asked what changes he'd made to future tournaments.

The Manchester United legend said he would scrap extra-time, explaining: “I do like the idea of getting rid of extra-time.

“I think it’s been a disappointment in extra-time.”

Ian Wright weighed in: "What would you do, go straight to penalties after the game?"

To which Neville replied: "Yeah. Force the result.

"It’s worked, actually, I think domestically in the Carabao Cup."

Roy Keane, however, proposed his own suggestion, adding: "Just have the extra time, just bring it down to ten minutes each way."

Neville said: "It feels like my career went a lot to extra time because out of the eight tournaments I was at, I think seven games out of eight tournaments went to extra time.

"It just felt like extra time was a large part of my career just because of England - it wasn’t a lot of times, but it just felt like it."

At Euro 2024, five matches went to extra-time, with only two games being concluded before a penalty shootout.

England scored in extra-time against Slovakia to prevent a shootout, having gone all the way against Switzerland.

And Spain beat Germany in extra-time as Mikel Merino scored his side's winner.

Neville's idea was put in place at this summer's Copa America as a penalty shootout immediately decided a winner, forgoing extra-time - except for the final, which Argentina won in extra-time.
