Theo Walcott urges Gareth Southgate to start one player who could solve England's Euro 2024 problem

Theo Walcott urges Gareth Southgate to start one player who could solve England's Euro 2024 problem

The former England star wants Gareth Southgate to make one big change.

Theo Walcott has urged Gareth Southgate to start one player who he thinks could spark life into England's Euro 2024 campaign.

England are virtually assured of a place in the last-16 of the tournament having taken four points from their opening two games, but their performances have left a lot to be desired.

Things started well when Jude Bellingham gave Southgate's side an early lead in their opening game against Serbia, before they lost control in the second half and were forced to hang on for the win.

In their second outing against Denmark, England were second best for much of the game and looked alarmingly lethargic and disjointed.

Much was made in the media post-match about England's uninspiring performance, particularly the ineffectiveness of Harry Kane both on and off the ball.

Former England stars Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer urged Kane to improve his movement against Slovenia on Tuesday, but Kane hit back by asking the media and ex-players to be more supportive and understanding.

England's pressing and creativity were severely lacking against Denmark, and former Three Lions star Theo Walcott believes Anthony Gordon could help solve the problem.

The Newcastle United winger is taking part in his first major international tournament, but so far he has remained an unused substitute.

Walcott - who has teamed up with Extra Gum to offer free taxi rides to help fans watch the England game on June 25 - urged Southgate to start Gordon during an exclusive interview with SPORTbible.

"Gareth has come out and talked about players not being able to press and not having the players to do that - I feel like they do have the players, particularly on the bench," Walcott told SPORTbible.

"I'm a big believer in pace. It doesn't really matter what sort of game it is, any pace kills teams, it creates space for other players.

"I was that player who would make the unselfish runs to provide the space for other players to affect the game."

Walcott continued: "I've been a big advocate of Anthony Gordon, I've worked with him up close and I've always felt like he's someone who can carry the ball, can win free-kicks, does something a bit different to the other players in the squad.

"They haven't really got raw pace and he has got that.

"I'm a big fan of [Bukayo] Saka of course, [Phil] Foden and [Cole] Palmer, but I feel it's like you can only play one of them.

"It's a great conundrum to have as a manager, but I would like to see Gordon, and if you want a bit more pace as well then Ollie Watkins would be that pressing trigger for the team."

England will look to secure top spot in Group C when they take on Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday evening.
