England fans are only just realising they've been signing the wrong 'Three Lions' lyrics for years

The 'Three Lions' song is synonymous with England at major international tournaments but fans have sung it incorrectly all this time.

England kick off their Euro 2024 campaign this weekend which can only mean it's time to put on your best singing voice and chant along to our famous anthem.

For the next month, every pub up and down the country will be full of fans belting out the iconic 'Three Lions' song and you can bet the hit anthem will become a chart-topper yet again.

In fact, the popular anthem was created in the 90s with the help of the comedy double act David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, who are now synonymous with England at major international tournaments.

It's thanks to the song that we have the famous 'It's Coming Home' lyric but does anyone actually know the rest of the words?

Well, apparently not. The most common misheard line in the Euro '96 anthem is 'jewels remain still gleaming', but the actual lyric 'Jules Rimet still gleaming' in fact pays homage to the former FIFA president.

Frenchman Rimet was the man the old World Cup trophy was named after between 1946 and 1970.

He was the president of FIFA for 33 years, which is still the longest time that anyone has held that position.

The trophy stopped being used after Brazil won it for a third time, meaning they were allowed to keep it forever. However, it was later stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered since.

So, if England are victorious in Germany this summer, then make sure you remember the right words while chanting along.

Some fans are choosing to embrace the erroneous lyrics though, with a post going viral on X (formerly Twitter) featuring the controversial multi-coloured England flag with 'jewels remain still gleaming' emblazoned on it.

England fans need something to smile about after all. Surely it's time that the song reminds us of good memories, rather than a penalty shootout defeat to Germany in Euro '96 or even worse, Italy three years ago.
