YouTube star MrBeast gave a blunt response when Cristiano Ronaldo suggested he could overtake his number of subscribers on the platform.

Ronaldo teased last week that a mystery person would appear on his channel in a video that he said will 'break the Internet'.

A number of huge football figures were put forward as potential guests, including Lionel Messi, Sir Alex Ferguson and even Ronaldo's most recent Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in what would have been a blockbuster episode.

But the 39-year-old instead announced a collaboration with MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, who is the most popular account on YouTube with 331 million subscribers.

The video passed 1.7 million views in the first hour - with Ronaldo asking MrBeast if he could pass his number of subscribers. The Portugal icon currently has over 67 million subscribers.

When Ronaldo asked, MrBeast coughed before leaning into the mic and stating: "No!"

He added: "It depends what you start doing. If you start bringing in other footballers, and reacting to your best or biggest plays, I think that what crush it.

"If you find a rhythm, I think you could make some killer content."

Ronaldo replied: "I don't really want to beat that record, honestly. This record is for you."

MrBeast continued: "You have a million followers [on social media]. I want to have a billion followers on YouTube. It'll take some time.

"Your greatest asset [on YouTube] is that anyone will film with you. You could have so many cool collabs - all these big names.

"After a big game, you could hop on for five minutes and do a podcast. So many people would want to know what you think.

"I don't think it has to be hard stuff. I would just do more football-related things because that's why people love you. You're the most followed person on the planet."
