Chris Wood received one of the most bizarre yellow cards in history after scoring a sensational hat-trick for New Zealand.

Wood is enjoying a prolific campaign for Nottingham Forest this season, having scored an impressive 18 goals in the Premier League.

And his stunning form has transferred over to the international stage following his heroics for his national team.

New Zealand smashed Fiji 7-0 in their World Cup qualifier on Friday, with Wood bagging three of his team's goals.

He scored a hat-trick of headers before being replaced in the second-half.

After leaving the field, Wood headed into the crowd, where he spent several minutes with fans, signing autographs and taking pictures.

Upon returning to the dugout, he was bizarrely booked by the match referee.

He was shown a yellow card for entering the crowd to interact with supporters in what has to be one of the most bizarre cautions in football history.

To his credit, Wood saw the funny side as he could be seen laughing with his teammates after being brandished with a yellow card.

The 33-year-old will be hoping to increase his goal tally for New Zealand when they return to action next Monday against New Caledonia.

Wood will then return to Forest, where he has helped his side compete for Champions League qualification.

He seems to be in the best form of his career, having netted 15 goals last season.

The forward, who has 18 league goals to his name this season, has been rewarded for his goal-scoring exploits, with Forest handing the player a new contract that keeps him at the City Ground until 2027.

"I'm very excited and very happy to have it completed and done, and I'm looking forward to the next couple of years, at least," Wood said about extending his stay at the club.

"I saw the ambition when I first arrived. When I spoke to the owner and his family and saw where they want to be and where they see this club to be - it was clear they have high ambitions and big dreams. He has backed the club for years, even before promotion to the Premier League, which is fantastic, and the team is pushing in the right direction.

"I can't thank the fans enough, they always come in voice and they're always behind the team and myself, it's a pleasure playing in front of them. Here's to a few more years together."
