Chelsea transfer collapses at the 11th hour as Enzo Maresca dealt more deadline-day frustration

Chelsea transfer collapses at the 11th hour as Enzo Maresca dealt more deadline-day frustration

Huge blow to Chelsea ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

Chelsea's proposed sale of a player has COLLAPSED at the 11th hour on deadline day, according to a report.

Chelsea remain in the market for new talent, having signed several players this summer, including Pedro Neto, Joao Felix and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, among others.

But Enzo Maresca is looking to trim his squad, too, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Hakim Ziyech departing Stamford Bridge.

The club had also hoped to offload Deivid Washington, who joined from Santos on a seven-year deal in the summer of 2023.

Strasbourg, who are co-owned by Todd Boehly's consortium, BlueCo, agreed a club-record €21 million deal to sign Washington.

However, according to L'Equipe, Strasbourg’s deal for Washington has collapsed ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

The 19-year-old has played just three games for Chelsea since he joined the club.

It's unknown whether Washington's move falling through has an impact on Chelsea's pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

The club have been keeping tabs on Sancho ahead of the transfer deadline.

Speaking ahead of his side's Europa Conference League clash against Servette, Maresca said: "If we can sign a player that can help us, for sure I would. Jadon is not our player. I know him very well. But he is not our player."

On Chelsea's business this summer, he added: "I said many times, the most important thing for us is to try and be focused on where we are, the way we want to try and improve.

"This is the only thing we can control. Many things can happen. We are very close [to the window closing]. But the main focus has always been on the pitch.

"I think it's a feeling for all the managers [to be happy when the window shuts]. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen. When it is closed, we will be more happy because we can focus on the squad we have.

"It's not just about the Conference League, we've already played two Premier League games. It's something that is not going to change [the transfer window being open once the season has started]. The transfer window is there. Clubs need to do business, so it will be there."
