Former Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez has revealed all on Petr Cech's unbelievable mind games in the 2012 UCL final.

It's one of the most memorable finals as Bayern faced Cech's Chelsea for the biggest prize in club football in their own backyard, the Allianz Arena.

Thomas Muller scored what looked like the winner in the 83rd minute but a leveller five minutes later from Didier Drogba saw the game end 1-1 in normal time.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time so the game was decided on penalties with Chelsea edging it 4-3 to win their first ever Champions League title.

Gomez played all 120 minutes of the final and in a recent interview for the club's Generation Wembley documentary on Amazon Prime Video, he recalled the moment of his crucial spot kick.

"I put the ball down and look at Cech, who's standing there and was a monster," Gomez said.

"It was clear to me I was going to hit the ball into one corner powerfully otherwise he would get to it.

"As I turn back around, I think no he'll save it. On the way to the ball I changed my mind and went for the other corner.

"The mad thing is afterwards I have doping control. Cech is sitting with me in doping control, he's shy and reserved. "Eventually he said 'Hey, what was with the penalty? You wanted to shoot towards the other corner first.' It totally confused me.

"He pretty much said what happened in me. That's brutal.

"It made me realise again what a great goalkeeper he is. He reads the players and the players' body language."

The victory in Munich saw Chelsea avenge their 2008 Champions League final defeat on penalties against Manchester United.

Cech was influential in getting the Blues over the line in 2012 saving penalties from both Ivica Olić and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

His ability to study players as described by Gomez will have made all the difference in the shootout.
