A new angle of Julian Alvarez's controversial penalty has emerged after the VAR drama during Atletico Madrid's shootout defeat against Real Madrid.
On Wednesday night, the two Madrid giants faced off inside the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with a place in the last eight of the Champions League at stake.
Heading into the second leg, Real were leading 2-1, but their advantage was cancelled out inside the first minute after Conor Gallagher netted for the hosts.

The match ended 1-1 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate as the clash went all the way to penalties.
During the shootout, Argentine forward Alvarez scored Atletico's second penalty, however, his joy was short-lived.
VAR had ruled that the 25-year-old touched the ball twice, meaning his kick was irregular and it ended up going down as a miss.

During the aftermath of the game, an alternate angle of Alvarez's penalty emerged on social media.
A close-up of Alvarez's shot seemed to show the faintest of touches from the Argentine's standing foot, which slightly nudged the ball before his right foot came through. You can watch the footage below.

When asked about the incident after the match, Atletico boss Diego Simeone said: "I just saw the image of the penalty. The referee said that when Julián stepped and kicked, he touched the ball with his foot, but the ball didn’t move.
"That’s something to discuss about whether it was a goal or not, but I’m proud of my players."

He added: "When he plants his foot and kicks, the ball doesn’t move even a little bit.
"But if VAR called it, I’ve never seen a penalty called by VAR, but it’s still valid, and they’ll have seen that he touched it. I want to believe they’ll have seen that he touched it."
Real will now look forward to a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against Premier League side Arsenal, with the first leg taking place at the Emirates Stadium on April 8.
