The FA are currently searching for Gareth Southgate's successor, after the 53-year-old stepped down from his position as England manager.

Pep Guardiola would be a dream appointment, but he has not decided whether he will extend his stay at Manchester City beyond the end of the season.

"As good a job Eddie [Howe] would do - I’m pretty sure of that - no one at Newcastle would want to lose him to that because of the job he’s done," Shearer said.
"Hopefully he can continue to do the job and finish off by winning a trophy with Newcastle.
"So in a way I’m hoping that Lee Carsley does very well so that the FA stay away from Eddie."

Howe guided Newcastle to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in 2022-23, securing their return to the Champions League after a two-decade absence.
Last season wasn't so successful, with injuries and patchy form resulting in a seventh-place finish.
Club loyalties aside, Shearer praised the FA for hiring Carsley on an interim basis.
"I think it’s the correct decision that England have made, it gives them time to look at the bigger picture and weigh up their options," he said.

"Gareth got the job in similar circumstances eight years ago - he did really well with the Under-21s and Lee has done exactly the same.
"He knows a lot of the players so I think it’s the wise thing to do, they can take their time and have a look and then who knows.
"There’s a great opportunity for Lee to go in and do really well and then who knows, he might do really well and end up getting the job. Without doubt he'll be an option."
