American actor and comedian Adam Sandler was a surprise guest at Stamford Bridge on Monday as Chelsea recorded a 3-2 win over Newcastle United.

The 57-year-old, who was recently named Hollywood's top earner following the success of his stand-up comedy tour amongst other projects, is a self-confessed novice when it comes to football.

But after being spotted playing a pickup game of basketball at a leisure centre in West London this week, Sandler continued his sporting adventure with a trip to Chelsea's 40,000-seater stadium.

He watched from the stands as goals from Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk sealed all three points for Mauricio Pochettino's side in their fight for a European spot.

This isn't the first time Sandler has watched the Blues. Back in 2009, he attended a game between Fulham and Chelsea at Craven Cottage – and was told to "shut up" by those around him.

Speaking about his experience to a local radio station, he said: "My friend opened the newspaper and saw an ad for the game.

"He said 'do you want to go to a soccer game', I said 'yeah that's a great idea, I've never been to one'.

"So we all went there and they were really nice, we were at Fulham vs Chelsea and it was at an old-style venue [Craven Cottage]. We sat in the Chelsea section and the tunes were rocking!

"I couldn't believe how great everyone was singing, on key. It was rough men singing gently."

Sandler managed to go unnoticed, despite being the only person in the crowd to be wearing a baseball cap.

"Not a soul saw me, although I stood out a bit," he laughed. "I was the only one not singing and the only one wearing a baseball hat; there wasn't a single baseball hat in the crowd."

The actor described the experience as an "excellent" one but says he was silenced during the game.

"I want to learn more and more," he added. "I kept asking questions, 'how many teams are in the League?', 'how many games?', until I was told to shut up!"
