The Three Lions are on the hunt for Gareth Southgate’s successor after the 53-year-old resigned from his post days after his side’s second successive European Championship final defeat.

In a statement, the FA announced that the process of appointing Southgate’s successor was already underway, with a manager set to be confirmed as soon as possible. With England’s Nations League campaign set to kick off in September, an interim solution could also be selected if required.

One name that has long been mooted as a future international manager is Guardiola.

The Spaniard, who has won everything there is to win at club level with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, is under contract at the latter club until next summer but may be looking for a new challenge after then.

Naturally, Guardiola’s wages are likely to be among the stumbling blocks, however, the manager has long expressed an openness to managing on the international stage, provided it’s not with Spain.

"I think that is not going to happen," Guardiola, a proud Catalan, responded in 2018 to being asked if he would be interested in managing Spain in the future.

Speaking generally about international management, however, Guardiola said: "In our lives, we have dreams of what we'd like to do in the future, but it doesn't mean it's going to happen.

"I would like to play a World Cup and a European Championship. I would like to live in that situation. When I see the World Cup, I think I would like to be there. I had just one chance to do it as a player.

"In eight, 12, 14 years maybe it could happen. It's just a dream I have as a manager and a person. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't."
