Paul Scholes tells Gareth Southgate to use Trent Alexander-Arnold in new position he's never played before

Scholes wants Southgate to make key changes for the Euro 2024 group clash against Slovenia.

Paul Scholes has told Gareth Southgate to trial Trent Alexander-Arnold in a new position for England's Euro 2024 clash against Slovenia on Tuesday.

England have picked up four points from their two group stage games so far, and sit behind group leaders Denmark by virtue of goals scored.

But the Three Lions have been criticised for their performances in both fixtures, particularly surrounding a lack of urgency.

England legends Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney have all given their verdicts on where the side needs to improve, while Jamie Carragher has said he would make two key changes for the Slovenia clash.

Now, former Three Lions and Manchester United midfielder Scholes has discussed his team selection - and he wants to see Alexander-Arnold moved out of his midfield position.

The Liverpool star has slotted in alongside Declan Rice for both games so far, but was taken off after just 53 minutes against Denmark and replaced by Conor Gallagher.

But while Scholes doesn't want Alexander-Arnold to continue playing in midfield, he does want to keep him in the team - at right-back.

While the 25-year-old, who is right-footed, has occasionally switched sides to cover for Andy Robertson in transitions at Liverpool, he has yet to start a full match at left-back.

Taking to his Instagram, Scholes wrote: "Sunday am thoughts... TAA left-back, Kobbie Mainoo centre mid, Palmer on the right... would give reasons but too many touchy f***ers out there."

Scholes' verdict appears to indicate he would pick Mainoo over Conor Gallagher in midfield, with Kieran Trippier then missing out due to Alexander-Arnold's position change.

Some have suggested that Bukayo Saka moves out to the left of attack in place of Phil Foden, which would then free up Palmer - who hasn't played a minute at Euro 2024 thus far - to play on the right side.
