Sky Sports reporter drops huge update on next England manager search as FA make major decision

The FA have made their decision.

The FA have officially opened talks with Thomas Tuchel's representatives over the vacant England manager position.

Tuchel has been heavily linked to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford due to United's disastrous start to the season, however, the German has now emerged as the frontrunner to become England's new manager.

It was reported by The Times on Monday that the FA were considering an approach for Manchester City's Pep Guardiola, however, the Spaniard looks more inclined to extend his stay at the Etihad beyond this season.

According to Sky Sports England had accelerated their search for Gareth Southgate's full-time replacement over the last few days, with Tuchel emerging as the primary target.

Tuchel has been out of work since May after being forced to leave Bayern Munich at the end of last season as the German giants failed to win the Bundesliga for the first time since 2012.

The news appears to rule out current interim manager Lee Carsley, who has been very public over his lack of desire for the role.

Carsley has confirmed he had not formally applied for the role, as well as stating he 'hopes' to return to his duties as the under 21s manager.

Speaking after England's 3-1 win against Finland, Carsley confirmed his position.

"I’ve not thought that much about it, I keep saying the same thing. It’s a privileged position I’m in, I’m really enjoying it," Carsley explained to Gabriel Clarke.

“I’m totally in the middle, my bosses have made it clear what they need from me. This job deserves a world class coach who’s won trophies, and I’m still learning.”

England have been a mixed bag since their heartbreaking defeat to Spain in Euro 2024.

Carsley's first outing as England boss showed a lot of promise as England cruised to victory over Ireland in impressive fashion.

However, the performances have left a lot to be desired since, and despite two victories in three games Carsley's men have never quite got into the flow they did against Ireland.
