The reason why England's players are wearing black armbands against Finland

The reason why England's players are wearing black armbands against Finland

England take on Finland in their second Nations League fixture on Tuesday evening at Wembley.

England players will once again wear black armbands for their Nations League fixture against Finland on Tuesday, having also done so for their 2-0 win over Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Three Lions stars took to the field in Dublin wearing the black armbands in memory of former manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who died last month at the age of 76.

He had announced in January that he was been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

The Swede took charge of England between 2001 and 2006, and managed them at three tournaments including the 2006 World Cup.

After leaving his role, Eriksson had further managerial spells in English football with Manchester City and Leicester, as well as a short stint as director of football at Notts County.

The FA are planning a large-scale tribute to the Swede ahead of Tuesday's clash against Finland.

And they have confirmed to SPORTbible that part of the tribute will involve England players wearing black armbands during the match itself.

After Eriksson's passing was announced, FA CEO Mark Bellingham told the official England Football website: "This is a very sad day. He gave all England fans such special memories.

"No-one can ever forget the 5-1 victory in Munich against Germany under Sven's guidance.

"Sven will be rightly recognised and forever remembered for his significant work with the England team, and for his wider contribution to the game.

"On behalf of my colleagues at the FA, past and present, our thoughts are with his friends and family today.

"He will be much missed, and we will pay tribute to him when we played Finland at Wembley next month."
