Liverpool have officially announced the signing of PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo.
The move came as somewhat a shock to Liverpool fans, given that Manchester United were the team who were seemingly leading the race for the Netherlands international.
Officially signing in a £37 million deal, subject to add-ons, it was announced on Boxing Day that Liverpool were going to make an approach for Gakpo, and then, just two days later, the signing was confirmed.

However, it was revealed by CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs that United had never placed a formal bid for his services ahead of January, despite Erik ten Hag's interest in the player.
Now Gakpo arrives at Liverpool as another in a long line of swift and smart transfers made by the club, as he joins a formidable frontline and a team looking to push for the top four and trophies in the second half of the season.
This season, the 23-year-old has been one of the most in-form forwards in Europe, netting 13 goals and providing 17 assists in just 24 games for PSV.

On top of that, he starred at the World Cup for the Netherlands, scoring in all three group games against Senegal, Qatar and Ecuador.
He has been a key player for his club, starting all but one of his 24 appearances and currently has the most recorded assists in Europe in total this season.
Despite the fact that Liverpool already have Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota to call upon, Gakpo has been brought in for the present, as much as the future.

Jota is currently out of action until February, whilst Diaz suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury and won't be back in action until March. Plus, Firmino's contract does expire in the summer and the 31-year-old could depart after eight years at the club.
Considering Gakpo can play anywhere across the front line, his flexibility will be key for Klopp, as his side look for a strong second half of the season.
“I feel really good, I'm really excited to be here," Klopp told the official Liverpool website.
"I'm looking forward to start training and start playing for this amazing club.

“I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years.
“I think for me personally it's also good to develop here and there's a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot of things from.”
