New Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo has sent a blunt message to Manchester United.

On Boxing Day it was announced that Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven had agreed a deal for the transfer of Gakpo.

The 23-year-old signed a contract that will keep him on Merseyside until 2028, despite having been linked with a move to United since last summer.

Gakpo was thought to be a long-term target for Erik ten Hag’s side, though United reportedly didn’t have the funds to make a move in the January window.

In turn, Liverpool moved fast to seal a deal for the Netherlands star.

Gakpo’s blunt message to Man Utd

United reportedly reignited their interest in Gakpo after the World Cup, having failed to get a deal over the line in the summer. The winger was one of the stars of Qatar, scoring three goals in the Netherlands’ five games.

Leeds were also in for Gakpo last summer and had a private jet on standby to whisk him to Yorkshire.

On the six-month-long transfer saga, Gakpo said, via the Mirror: “It was difficult this summer. It was a very intense period.”

On initially being snubbed by United, who opted to sign Brazilian winger Antony in his place, Gakpo added: “I tried to find my peace, but it was difficult. I thought I was going to Manchester United, but in the end it didn't work out.

“Leeds United came in. They are a good club, but I asked myself if I should really go there and when you have a lot of doubts, it is not good.”

Gakpo will complete the formalities of his £40million move from PSV today.
