Kompany spoke after Bayern Munich's 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Vincent Kompany has fired back at his critics following Bayern Munich's stunning Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb.

Bayern kicked off their first campaign in the new-look Champions League with a record 9-2 victory over Dinamo at the Allianz Arena.

Harry Kane (4), Michael Olise (2), Raphael Guerreiro, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretza all scored in a remarkable win for the Bundesliga club.

Several new records were set in the match, with Kane becoming the leading English goalscorer in Champions League history with 33 goals – surpassing the previous record of 30 held by Wayne Rooney.

He also became the first player to score three penalties in one match in the history of the competition.

It was also the first time a team has scored nine goals in one game in the Champions League.

Former Burnley manager Kompany was quick to praise his team after the match and fired back at critics who had questioned his appointment as head coach at the start of the season.

Speaking about those who had claimed the Bayern job was too big for him, former Manchester City defender Kompany said [via Fabrizio Romano]: "I'll tell you something in a quick way just to prove a point.

"I was born in Brussels, my dad was a refugee who came from Congo.

"What are my chances of even playing in the Premier League, winning something as a player, playing for the national team? The odds were 0.000 something. Now I'm a coach.

"Do you just stop believing in yourself and what you can achieve because of what other people say?

"The mentality is to keep going and in the end if you fail you fail, if you succeed you succeed. but you can always become better.

"Online you can always find stuff so I really don't take it personal."

Bayern next face Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday before taking on Bayer Leverkusen the following Saturday.

Kompany will then come up against former Premier League opposition in Aston Villa, in the Champions League on October 2.
