Lionel Messi could find himself playing in an unfamiliar position if he is to make a stunning return to Barcelona.
With his contract with Paris Saint Germain set to expire at the end of the current season, nothing has been agreed yet and Messi’s future at the club is currently up in the air.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been in fine form this season having scored 18 goals and assisted 17 in 32 appearances across all competitions for PSG.

As he continues to be linked with what will be an emotional return to Barcelona, he may find himself playing in a new position if he is to move back to the Camp Nou.
According to Spanish new outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona boss and Messi’s former teammate Xavi could play him in midfield.
It has been reported that Xavi would be interested in using Messi as one of four midfielders in his 4-3-3 system.

This means the Argentine will likely take over from youngster Pablo Gavi as a false left winger who will move inside as an ‘interior’ when the left back moves forward.
Apart from that, Messi could also be used as an ‘interior’ on the right side, with support from midfielders such as Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets.
However, if Xavi decides to play Messi on the right side of midfield, it could hamper the progress of Pedri, who have been shining in that role so far this season.
During his time with Barcelona, Messi often played as the right winger or as a striker.

However, with Ousmane Dembele and Robert Lewandowski seemingly nailing down those spots, Messi may have to settle on a different role.
Recently, Barcelona’s vice president Rafael Yuste said they have made contact with Messi and his representatives.
He said, as per The Guardian: “Leo and his family know the affection I have for them.

“I participated in the negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result. I’ve always had and I have this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club.
“Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.”
Will we see Messi back playing for Barcelona next season? Only time will tell.
