Incredible moment 'empty' Buenos Aires street celebrated World Cup win captured

Incredible moment 'empty' Buenos Aires street celebrated World Cup win captured

Gonzalo Montiel's winning penalty kicked off incredible scenes in Argentina's capital, including in an empty 'main street' in the city.

Gonzalo Montiel's winning penalty kicked off amazing scenes back home in Argentina, as one 'empty' street was suddenly filled with celebrating fans.

Possibly the greatest World Cup final in the history of the tournament twisted one way and then the other on Sunday evening.

Just before the 80th minute mark there was little to no doubt that Argentina were going to win but from thereon in it could have gone either way.

It was rather apt that it went down to a penalty shoot-out, with Emiliano Martinez the hero, as he was saving a late shot in extra time, as the Aston Villa goalkeeper kept out Kingsley Coman's attempt, and psyched out Aurelien Touchameni.

After all the drama and tension it's no surprise that there were scenes of immense jubilation when Montiel calmly slotted home the winner.

That was especially true in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, as captured by one video, which showed Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the busiest streets, be almost empty, before fans ran around celebrating when the final spot kick went in, as you can see below.

It's incredible how such a busy street is virtually empty at the start of the video, and you can't see anyone for moments of the ride along.

You can hear the fans at the far end of the street however, as they get ready to watch they hope will be the final penalty of the game.

It goes eerily quiet, as Montiel steps up, and then the roar of the crowd as he defies Hugo Lloris' efforts to save his spot kick and it goes into the back of the net is amazing.

Scenes throughout the city after the game showed just how special a moment it was, for them to become world champions for the first time since 1986.

Of course many countries, including England, would love to have to wait just 36 years between their titles.

Inside the Argentina camp, celebrations were on everyone's lips as well, with Sergio Aguero right in the middle of the party on the pitch, and in the dressing room.

The retired former forward was being criticised by some, whilst others were absolutely loving the delight he had for his countrymen and especially his mate Lionel Messi.

However, he did annoy some fans as he seemingly threw shade at France youngster Edouardo Camavinga for no real reason.
