With Euro 2024 less than a month away, we’ve turned to AI to see how they’ve predicted England’s group games for the tournament.
However, we’ve not just asked one AI chatbots for their predictions, we’ve turned to all three of the big powerhouses of AI technology. Gemini, ChatGPT and Copilot have all been asked to score England’s group games against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.
But before we get into the AI predictions, its worth mentioning that our partner Ladbrokes is will be hosting a free-to-play prediction game called 1-2-Free over the course of the Euros Tournament.
Make sure you have a Ladbrokes account and, whether you agree with the predictions from these mysterious technologies or not, you will be able to predict the scores of three games from each stage of the group games, where each correct score will result in a prize, whether that’s free bets or cash.
Here is what we entered into the prompt for the AI:
“Based on your understanding of England's group in the Uefa Euro 2024 Championship taking place through June and July this year, can you provide predictions for the scores in England's group first group-stage match against Serbia based on likely team selection (where you can assess team selection for England's & Serbia's matches over the last full year from today), form of the likely starting players in their respective leagues since Feb-24, and recent international form (from March international games)”
Rather than just asking ‘who will win?’ The AI has been given a number of considerations to put into the algorithm such as the form of the players, likely team selection and previous meetings of the two nations. We also then kept the same template for the Denmark and Slovenia games.
These are predictions from AI, as every football fan knows, the sport is unpredictable so whilst they use all the data that has been given to them, they may not always be right.
England vs Serbia
Gemini - England 1-0 Serbia
ChatGPT - England 2-1 Serbia
Copilot - England 3-1 Serbia
Whilst all three predict an England win, each of them think that England will score a different number of goals. ChatGPT and Copilot also reference the threat of Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose scored 27 goals in 26 games for Al Hilal since moving to the Saudi Pro League side at the beginning of the 23/24 season.
England vs Denmark
Gemini - England 2-1 Denmark
ChatGPT - England 1-1 Denmark
Copilot - England 2-1 Denmark
Whilst Gemini and Copilot are in agreement of the England win and a 2-1 scoreline, ChatGPT however, is going against the other technologies and believe it will be a 1-1 draw. Although the Danes managed a run to the semi-finals in 2021, in 2023/24 they’ve struggled to score against San Marino, the Faroe Isles and lost to Northern Ireland back in November.
England vs Slovenia
Gemini - England 3-0 Slovenia
ChatGPT - England 2-0 Slovenia
Copilot - N/A
Both Gemini and ChatGPT think that England will have a comfortable game against the lowest ranked opponents in England’s group, in spite of Slovenia having beaten both the USA and Portugal so far this year.
If you think that England will win all three of their group games, https://bit.ly/LadbrokesEng94 for the Three Lions to do just that.
With the game predictions covered, we wanted to dig a bit deeper, so we asked the AI to predict England’s team for the first game against Serbia given the recent announcement of the provisional squad. This was done using the prompt:
After England's 2024 European Championship squad announcement on Tuesday 21 May, predict England's first eleven for their first group game against Serbia taking into consideration form from the 2023/24 football season
In regards to how the AI think England will set up for the opening game of the tournament, all the technologies believe Southgate are predictable and will play safe.
They don’t see a start for Cole Palmer or Jarrod Bowen with Gemini suggesting that Bowen’s playing style is made ‘slightly redundant' by other players in the squad.
England’s back four will be Walker, Stones, Maguire and Shaw with Pickford in goal according to the big three AI generators.
Bellingham and Rice are the obvious choices with Southgate and the AI, the final suggestions being that final places in the squad are up for grabs.
Ladbrokes’ 1-2-Free gives players the opportunity in each round of fixtures to win £50.
To play, simply sign into your Ladbrokes account and predict the score of three games from the selection. Each correct score will result in a prize, whether that’s free bets or cash.
