Lewis Hamilton revealed plan to legally change his name that he will 'compete in F1 under'

Lewis Hamilton is one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time.

Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton has previously revealed plans to legally change his name.

Hamilton, 40, is often regarded as the best driver in F1's rich history, having won seven world titles.

So far in his career, the Brit has won 105 races, secured 202 podiums and collected 4941.5 points.

Ahead of the 2025 season, Hamilton made a high-profile move from Mercedes to Ferrari as he aims to win a record-breaking eighth world championship.

Back in 2022, Hamilton stated his intentions to legally change his name and add his mother's surname.

As reported by The Guardian, he said: "I am really proud of my family’s name. My mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.

"I don’t really fully understand the whole idea that when people get married the woman loses her name and I really want my mum’s name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”

When asked how long the change will take to become official, Hamilton said: "Hopefully soon. We are working on it."

According to Wales Online, Hamilton intended to use the new name when competing in the future.

Following his victory at Silverstone in 2024, Hamilton took his mother onto the stage alongside a large group of his family to celebrate his first win since 2021.

So far in the 2025 season, Hamilton has struggled to adapt to his new surroundings as he has frequently finished behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

After 10 races, Hamilton sits sixth in the standings with 79 points, 25 points behind Leclerc.

Speaking recently, Hamilton admitted that he has asked for upgrades to be made on the car.

He said: "Of course I’m asking for these things [upgrades]. I don’t know why we haven’t been bringing upgrades, I think we have one hopefully coming soon.

"The mindset for me, I’m like ‘there’s a lot of changes that need to be made in the system.’ I wish I could tell you what's happening. There's a lot going on in the background."

Hamilton is hoping his fortunes will turn around next weekend when F1 returns with the Austrian Grand Prix.
