Fresh angle emerges of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen incident at US GP and it's got F1 fans divided

Fresh angle emerges of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen incident at US GP and it's got F1 fans divided

Norris received a five-second penalty for passing Verstappen while off the track in the closing stages of the US GP.

A new angle has emerged of the incident that saw Lando Norris given a five-second penalty for an illegal overtake on Max Verstappen at the United States Grand Prix.

The pair were battling for third place in the latter stages of the race in Austin, with Norris having quickly caught Verstappen on fresher hard tyres.

But the Brit, who has won two races this season, found it difficult to pass his championship rival on the main DRS straight.

On lap 52, Norris was finally able to keep close enough behind Verstappen through the twisting corners at the start of the lap to launch a move.

He did so around the outside of the Red Bull at turn 12, but went off the track in order to successfully make the move.

Norris held on to third place but was demoted to fourth at the chequered flag after receiving a five-second time penalty for an illegal overtake.

The stewards deemed that he had gained an advantage by leaving the track, with an official FIA document explaining the decision as follows: "Car 4 [Norris] left the track at turn 12 and gained a lasting advantage.

"Car 4 was overtaking Car 1 [Verstappen] on the outside, but was not level with Car 1 at the apex.

"Therefore under the Driving Standards Guidelines, Car 4 had lost the 'right' to the corner."

Now, a new angle of the incident has emerged on social media - and it has got fans talking.

The still image has been captured from aerial footage of the Austin circuit, and shows Verstappen and Norris entering turn 12.

While the angle shows Verstappen was clearly placing his car in order to hit the white line on the outside of the corner, Norris was therefore forced to drive off the track due to his car's positioning.

And the image has created plenty of differing opinions from F1 fans.

One wrote: "The good question to ask is not where is Verstappen trying to go, but where he wants Lando to go."

A second opined: "It's a trick he has perfected. I am surprised the other drivers keep getting suckered into it."

A third argued: "No idea where Lando was going. It was perfectly clear that there was no chance on the outside."

And a fourth said: "Lando? Apparently off the track and around Max... a little silly."

While a fifth stated: "Rules need to change. As Jenson [Button, on Sky Sports F1] stated, Max knew if he was in front at the apex he didn't need to make the corner if Lando tried the overtake."

Verstappen was asked to give his thoughts on Norris' penalty in his post-race press conference after finishing in third place.

He replied: "I think it's quite clear: you can't overtake outside of the white line. I got done for it also here in 2017, or whatever it was. So I lost my podium like that.

"It's very clear in the rules. Outside the white line, you cannot pass."
