Darts fans have crowned the winner of best fancy dress outfit at World Championship and the story behind it is incredible

The outfit has gone viral.

A person who attended the World Darts Championship as Peter Lovenkrands' dog is being tipped to win this year's competition for best dressed at the Ally Pally.

Sky Sports captured the fan during the opening leg of Tuesday's second-round clash between Dave 'Chizzy' Chisnall and 'Rapid' Ricky Evans – a game that involved an extremely unfortunate miscount.

The outfit soon went viral as fans reminisced about the famous tale of Rangers legend Peter Lovenkrands, his pet golden Labrador yet and one of the the greatest Twitter interactions in recent memory. Let me explain.

Back in February 2016, former Schalke, Newcastle and Birmingham City forward Lovenkrands posted a link to an Instagram photo on his Twitter account with the caption: “12 years old today. Happy birthday my beautiful boy.”

He received plenty of replies from fans, including Gers supporter David Ashcroft, who commented: “Hopefully grows up and scores goals against Celtic, just like his old man!”

To the amusement of many, David clearly didn't take the time to click on said Instagram link because the 12-year-old boy in question was, in fact, a Labrador.

To his credit, David had a laugh about his mistake. “I can’t believe I did that," he wrote. "Always click the link before replying!”

He also mentioned Rangers in another tweet, asking: “[Are we] gonna sign @lovenkrands11 dog tomorrow so a don’t look as daft!”

Eight years on and the Twitter interaction remains a treasured moment for many, including this darts fan who decided to pay tribute to Lovenkrands' dog, who unfortunately didn't manage to score many goals against Celtic.

Back in 2022, Twitter user @MonaLisez celebrated halloween by posting a picture of his incredible dog costume alongside the caption: "Hopefully he grows up and scores against Celtic just like his dad."

The idea went down a hit on social media. One fan commented: "Hands down best Halloween costume I've ever seen," while another wrote: "Can’t imagine trying to explain this to someone who doesn’t get it."

Lovenkrands, who made 182 appearances for Rangers, scoring 54 goals, was a reserve team coach at their academy for a number of years after hanging up his boots.

He left the Scottish side in the summer of 2020 and eventually took over at Danish first division side Fremad Amager – although the former Denmark international left his role as first-team manager in June 2022.

Lovenkrands has more recently taken up a coaching role at Danish side AaB Fodbold but left in May this year for personal reasons.

Before he walked out of Ibrox to find a coaching career elsewhere, Lovenkrands wrote: "I have been part of this special club for over 20 years and I have so many amazing memories as a player and a coach and as a fan, the club will always have a special place in my heart.

"And I want to thank all the fans who have supported me as a player and as a coach."
