Canelo Alvarez has claimed he would be able to beat a prime Floyd Mayweather if they set up a blockbuster rematch.

The Mexican fighter suffered the first defeat of his career when he came up against Mayweather back in 2013.

'Money' dominated his opponent and picked up a points victory at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo thinks it'd go differently nine years later, but doesn't believe Mayweather will ever be interested in a rematch.

He told GQ Sports: "I think it's difficult to say because that's never going to happen. But I am sure that in my prime he would never beat me."

At just 23-years-old, Canelo was no match for Mayweather who is 13 years his senior. His inexperience showed and Mayweather showboated throughout while picking his foe off.

Nine years on and Canelo is currently WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring supper middleweight champion. He attempted to claim the WBA light heavyweight title earlier this year but was beaten by Dmitry Bivol.

Many slammed Mayweather for taking on Canelo when he was young, which the 50-0 fighter clapped back at in 2020.

He told fans during a UK tour: "When I was 21 and I fight a guy who's 30, you know what they say? He was over the hill; Floyd beats fighters who are over the hill.

"Now if I'm 36 and Canelo is 23 - I'm more than 10 years older than him, and you're better when you're younger.

"But when I beat someone younger, then guess what? It [the story] becomes: I got too much experience. OK. How about the guys I beat who are my age?"

Canelo returns to action on Saturday night in a trilogy bout against Gennady Golovkin and all of his titles will be on the line.

The 32-year-old came out on top in 2017 and again in 2018 and claims this fight will be the 'most personal' of his career.
