According to Mike Verweij of the Telegraaf in the Netherlands, Arsenal face competition from Manchester United in the race for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez.
Verweij claims Manchester United are interested in the Argentine and are preparing an offer. Arsenal, after having their first approach rebuffed, are also interested in returning for the centre-back.
Any interest in Martinez by Manchester United would surely be boosted by the presence of new Manager Erik Ten Hag. The two spent three fruitful years together and the Argentine was a key member of Ten Hag's defence.

Manchester United's need for a centre-back is undoubtedly stronger than Arsenal's, which could also play into the Manchester club's favour. Harry Maguire endured a poor campaign and Ten Hag is likely to want to replace him on the left-side of his defence.
Arsenal, on the other hand, experienced positive seasons for both their centre-backs. Gabriel Magalhaes was strong and consistent on the left-side of defence and the return of William Saliba will add further competition to Arsenal's back-line.
Martinez is likely to see game-time as an important factor in his decision.

However, Arsenal won't be turned away and will likely still hold confidence in luring the Argentine to North London. Martinez is said to be open to a move to the Gunners and Arsenal will hope the attraction of their exciting project under Mikel Arteta will be enough to convince Martinez his future lies in London.
A signing by Arsenal would likely be the third signing in what looks to be a busy summer for the Gunners, who have already sealed moves for Sau Paulo's Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira of FC Porto.
