Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side were beaten on the road yet again as the club suffered their second defeat of the season following a 2-1 loss to Southampton.
After a bright start from Southampton, the Blues picked up and their efforts were rewarded, with Raheem Sterling scoring his third goal in two games from close range.
However, just minutes later, James Ward-Prowse’s corner was cleared, but only to the path of Romeo Lavia, who smashed the ball in from outside the box to equalise for Southampton.

On the stroke of halftime, the Saints took the lead though. Romain Perraud’s cross was converted by Adam Armstrong.
The second half saw Southampton maintain their impressive workrate, and they could’ve had more if it wasn’t for excellent defending from Marc Cucurella and Thiago Silva, and Chelsea were unable to respond which saw the hosts come out with all three points to bounce back from their defeat against Southampton at the weekend.

Here are five things Absolute Chelsea learned from the encounter on the south coast.
1) Thomas Tuchel and the Chelsea board need to address the midfield situation
Heading into the new Premier League campaign, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante were going to enter their final year of their Chelsea contracts. At this moment in time, there haven’t been concrete negotiations with regard to renewing their respective deals. In the showdown with Southampton, Jorginho looked out of his depth at times. The Italian’s ability to help defend his teammates was questionable throughout the entirety of the game.
2) With two days to go, signings need to be made

So far, the Blues have brought in players in key positions. With that being said, it is blatantly obvious that the Blues still need to spend. Thomas Tuchel’s side are lacking in midfield. With Kante picking up constant injuries, it is crucial that the side bring in another midfielder for the future. The same can be said for Chelsea’s attack. Kai Havertz cannot lead the line of the Blues’ front three. Going forward, the club needs an out and out goalscorer who will guarantee goals. Over the last few years, Chelsea’s problem is their ability to find the back of the net. The side are capable of creating endless chances, however, they can’t seem to convert their chances and will ultimately end up paying the price for it.
3) Thiago Silva’s leadership will be vital this season
Turning 38 next month, Thiago Silva is still at the top of his game. His consistency and leadership have been a breath of fresh air since his arrival from PSG. With recruitment being made at the back this season, it is refreshing to have a player like Silva be a real inspiration to those coming in. Throughout the season, there are going to be times where the side are on the back-foot. Silva’s experience and leadership will be key in those difficult situations. Ageing like a fine wine, Silva continues to show why he is one of the top players in the world in his position.

4) Armando Broja will feel a little hard done by
So far this season, Kai Havertz has failed to register a single goal. When the Blues are craving a goal, it is concerning that their man leading the line is failing to chip in with a goal. There is no denying his ability to work off the ball. However, it’s goals the side need and he is failing to deliver. Armando Broja has failed to play consistent minutes so far this season, albeit not helped by an injury setback. Given the fact that he is essentially Chelsea’s only out and out striker, it is about time that the Albanian international starts from the off to show that he is capable of leading from the off. That should start on Saturday against West Ham.
5) “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Over the years, Thomas Tuchel’s defensive record has been outstanding. In his early days at Chelsea, the Blues’ defensive record was solid and consistent. The German coach built a lot of his success around a five at the back system. However, we have seen the manager go to a 4-3-3 / 4-2-2-2 at times throughout the start of the campaign. With the new system, it has definitely shown some flaws in Chelsea’s defensive presence. The side are conceding more, which is a concern. With Wesley Fofana set to join, one would suspect that the club will revert to their five at the back system which has helped deliver success over the years.
Chelsea will host West Ham in their next game on Saturday and will be looking to get back to winning ways.
