The wishes of Thomas Tuchel will be key to a decision, with finances not thought to be a hindrance on any deal.
When the forward completed a return to Manchester last summer, Tuchel heaped praise on the 37-year-old.
He said: "I think he will have a huge impact. He is a true champion and has proved at any level, in any year, he can perform at outstanding levels. And don't forget, he will have an impact every day with the group, it's not just goals and assists.

“You ask me about it, which is fair enough. I think he will have a huge impact because he is a champion, a true champion. He has proved on any level in any year that he can perform on outstanding levels.
"Cristiano leads by example and makes things more complicated for us! Very exciting, we will not change our ambitions because of that."
Tuchel is thought to be a long-term admirer of Ronaldo but any decision will require the head coach’s blessing, as well as dialogue between him and the forward to discuss a tactical fit for next season.

Ronaldo netted 18 goals in the Premier League last season as his side missed out on Champions League football upon his return to the club.
The possibility of signing the world-class forward was previously discussed but it remained unclear as to whether these discussions would progress further.
Club-record signing Romelu Lukaku completed a return to Inter Milan on loan last month, leaving a space in the Blues’ attack as Ronaldo joining Chelsea can not be ruled out despite Manchester United’s reluctance to sell to a rival.
