Premier League player delayed his medical 'to finish watching Love Island'

Premier League player delayed his medical 'to finish watching Love Island'

Very few would be brave enough to do this.

There aren't many players brave enough to delay a medical, but very few would even dream of doing what Kell Watts did ahead of his loan move to Wigan.

Newcastle right-back Watts asked the League One side to delay his medical because Love Island was on.

The 23-year-old has returned for a second loan spell at Wigan from his parent club but was unwilling to check in for his medical until he had finished watching an episode of the popular dating show.

Club doctor Jonathan Tobin shared Watts' unusual request on social media after his loan move was officially confirmed.

He tweeted: "The only pre-signing medical I’ve ever done that had to be delayed because the signee insisted on watching Love Island.

"Not even joking. Tics, I give you Kell Watts. Some fella."

Watts will play at the DW Stadium two years after he first arrived, having previously spent time at Stevenage, Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United.

The former England youth international joined Newcastle's academy at the age of just eight. However, he has made just one senior appearance for the Magpies which came in the 2019/20 season during a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at St James' Park.

Speaking ahead of his return to Wigan, Watts said 'it felt like home'.

"When it first came about, it was something that I was really looking forward to doing," said the defender.

"The last time I was here, it felt like home, so it’s nice to be back home!

"Last time I was here, I created memories that will last my whole career, and I’m wanting to make more memories in a Wigan shirt now.

Watts' first task will be up against Derby, but not before their EFL Cup first round clash against Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham.
