Xabi Alonso could block transfer in first act as Liverpool manager

Xabi Alonso could block transfer in first act as Liverpool manager

Jurgen Klopp's rumoured successor Xabi Alonso could be set to make crucial transfer decision in his first act as Liverpool boss.

It is no secret that Liverpool are interested in Xabi Alonso as their Jurgen Klopp successor and the Spaniard may already made a key decision if he were to get the job.

Ever since Klopp announced he would be departing the club at the end of the season, the first name on everyone's lips to replace the German has been Alonso.

Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen side have taken the Bundesliga by storm this season, as they sit 10 points clear at the top of the table and remain unbeaten.

The former Liverpool midfielder fits every category Liverpool could ask for in Klopp's successor, with his youth, current success, and history with the club all key factors.

However, Liverpool aren't the only one of Alonso's former clubs looking for a new manager, with fellow Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich announcing Thomas Tuchel would be leaving at the end of the season.

The 42-year-old may already have one eye on Anfield though, after he attempted to sign one of Liverpool's up-and-coming talents in the summer.

According to the Mail, Alonso held talks for a loan move for defender Luke Chambers, who ended up on loan at League 1 side, Wigan Athletic.

Interestingly, Chambers has been playing in a similar to system to Alonso's Leverkusen this season as he has been deployed in a back three for the Latics.

Chambers has been very impressive this season, and there is almost certainly going to be interest in extending his loan at the DW Stadium, but Alonso may have other ideas if he is to take the reins at Anfield.

There are still reservations about what decision Alonso will make, but Jurgen Klopp has assured fans that whoever takes over won't have the impossible task many fear will be the case.

“I really think it is the perfect moment for a new manager and not the wrong one because we didn’t win everything, we left spaces," Klopp explained ahead of Liverpool's draw with Manchester City.

"Go at City after Pep Guardiola and you need to be champion ten years in a row to achieve the same.

“The people here are different. The people gave Bill Shankly the chance, and what came after Bill Shankly, and they are all bigger than we are, and the people will understand in the end that this was a fantastic time and we all enjoyed it like hell," Klopp continued.

“What a ride. But I am 100 percent sure that what they learned over the years is if we trust and we push then everything is possible. This team will attract top-class managers, 100 percent.

“I came in at the right moment because it got lost a little bit and maybe I was the one who helped everyone to understand again how important it is. The club is special. Not because of the buildings – other clubs have nice stadiums – but because of the people.”
