Fans accuse Jamie Carragher of double standards after Liverpool title race comments

Supporters aren't happy.

Jamie Carragher's comments about Liverpool faltering in the Premier League title race have seen supporters call him out for 'double standards'.

Jurgen Klopp's side slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat against bitter rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave the Toffees their first win against Liverpool at Goodison Park since 2010.

It all but ends Klopp's hopes of picking up a second Premier League title in his final season in charge of the club.

Liverpool are second in the table but will likely slip to third, with Manchester City currently having two games in hand.

Speaking on Sky Sports, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher claimed the Reds have 'overachieved' this season.

He explained: "Man City are on a different level to Liverpool and l also think Arsenal have the edge on Liverpool. In the last six to eight weeks when the top three have been going for the title, it has been a hope rather than a belief.

"In some ways, I think this team has overachieved because l don’t think they are that good.

"I don’t mean that as a criticism. They have done brilliantly well, they have lost four games out of the last 44 in the Premier League. I am finding it hard to be too critical because with the team and the quality of the players they have got… they have over-performed this season and they are just not quite good enough. When it has come to the crunch, they have just been a little bit short.”

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League last term, outside the top four for the first time since 2016.

It's seen fans point out the treatment Carragher and fellow pundit Gary Neville gave to Arsenal after they failed to stop City from picking up a third Premier League title in a row.

The Gunners finished fifth in 2021/2022 before pushing City to the limit last term.

Carragher and Neville said it was Arsenal's best chance to win the title, which X users were quick to point out.

One person said: "Just incredible how this courtesy was never given to Arsenal last season when the whole country had us finishing 5th. Neville and Carragher were doing hit pieces and talking about how we’re never getting this opportunity again, amazing how they love putting a ceiling on us."

Another added: "So so true!!! Last year we over-achieved and they smashed us."

Someone put: "He just can’t give them a realistic compliment."

While someone said: "Liverpool under Klopp have been the media darlings for a long time now. They all wanted the fairytale ending and they didn't get it."
