Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has been called out by some social media users over a comment he made on Israel amid the war in Gaza.

The latest conflict in the region began in October 2023, when forces from Hamas - who run the Gaza strip - invaded Israel and killed around 1,200 people, as well as taking 250 hostages.

Since then, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, over 60,000 people - including over 17,000 children - have been killed in Gaza by Israeli forces.

A United Nations commission found that the Israeli regime has been committing genocide in the region, while Gaza also meets all three UN criteria for famine.

In October, a ceasefire agreement led by US President Donald Trump was signed by Israel and Hamas, which included the returning of hostages.

But last week, Israel launched more strikes on Gaza, reportedly killing at least 104 people, after they claimed that Hamas had broken the agreement by killing an Israeli soldier - something that Hamas denied.

Mayweather, who won all 50 of his professional boxing fights, recently attended a Republican Jewish Coalition conference in Las Vegas, stating that he was '100 per cent' behind the country of Israel.

"I'm not with you guys 10 per cent, 50 per cent," he told the crowd in attendance. "I will always be the voice for the people of Israel. I will always stand behind the country of Israel.

"The one and only, Floyd 'Money' Mayweather, and Israel. I will always be there for you guys when you guys don't have a voice."

Criticism of Mayweather's comments have centred around the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and their actions in Gaza.

The International Criminal Court sent out an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, alleging that he is 'responsible for the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024'.

In 2019, the Israeli PM was indicted on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

The criminal trial against him has been repeatedly postponed as a result of Israel's war on Gaza.

In June, his lawyers requested that the court excuse him from testifying over a two-week period so he could 'focus on security issues' relating to Iran and Gaza, according to The Guardian.

Responding to Mayweather's remarks, one social media user wrote: "Mayweather don't know what he's talking [about]."

Another said: "I don't think Mayweather could point out Israel on a map."

And a third asked: "Since when has he been a voice for Israel?"

While a fourth said: "Floyd Mayweather made clear that he always supports Israel, while a UN report released in September 2025 stated that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza."

Mayweather has indeed visited Israel on a number of occasions since the Gaza war began in October 2023.

After a visit to the nation in October 2024, he described Ben Gurion Airport, which is 20km south-east of Tel Aviv, as a 'home away from home'.
