Exclusive: Wrexham executive refuses to rule out Jamie Vardy signing after promotion

Wrexham could make an audacious move for the Premier League winner.

A Wrexham executive has refused to rule out making a sensational move for Jamie Vardy following promotion to League One.

Wrexham have been on some journey since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their takeover in 2021, and last month another historic achievement was secured.

Phil Parkinson's side secured promotion for the second season in a row to return to League One, English football's third tier.

Last year Wrexham returned to the Football League after a 15-year absence, making their rise even more impressive.

The Welsh side will now look to bolster their playing squad in a bid to establish themselves as a stable League One club, and maybe even push for promotion to the Championship.

Given the financial backing of Reynolds and McElhenney, recruitment shouldn't be too much of an issue; Wrexham's weekly wage bill in 2023-24 was higher than those at all but five of the teams playing in the division above.

In the past Wrexham have persuaded players to drop drown from higher divisions to play for them, most notably Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher.

The Welsh club are now starting to get linked with Championship and even Premier League calibre talents, including the likes of Jamie Vardy.

The 37-year-old may be approaching the end of his career, but this season he still managed to score 18 goals as Leicester City won the Championship and secured an immediate return to the top flight.

Vardy's Leicester contract is set to expire this summer, and with no news of a renewal, Wrexham could be in the hunt to sign him on a Bosman transfer.

When asked if Wrexham could make a move for the Premier League winner, Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker refused to rule anything out.

"There's nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn't be a great Wrexham player," Ker said in an exclusive interview with SPORTbible.

"It's not a name I've had mentioned inside the building before but, you know, age and profile wouldn't put us off."

After rising from non-league to the top flight, Vardy won the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield with Leicester.

Over the last 12 years he has also played in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League and represented England at two major tournaments.

Wrexham have made room for new recruits by letting go several out-of-contract first team players.

Welcome to Wrexham season 3 will launch on Friday, May 3 only on Disney+ in the UK. The launch of the eight-episode season will include the first two episodes, followed by a new episode each week.
